I am Gus Saper, a fifth generation Houstonian and a third generation Texas A & M “Aggie”. I have devoted my 37 year career as a trial lawyer dedicated to criminal defense work. However, over the years as the business world has become more regulated I have found that my practice overlaps with that of a commercial trial lawyer. Often civil litigation involving the SEC, CFTC and other government regulatory agencies is the precursor to criminal charges. Being able to handle civil investigations and litigation as well as the criminal case is essential to a good outcome for the client. I pride myself on being able to do both. While I have dealt with many of these types of cases I continue to represent those accused in both state and federal court with drug possession, money laundering, Medicare fraud, DWI/DUI, family violence offenses, and the like.
My life experiences have helped to prepare me for the practice of law. After two years at Texas A & M I joined VISTA (Volunteers In Service To America) often referred to as the domestic Peace Corp. I spent my time with VISTA in Greenville, South Carolina working in minority communities acting as a community organizer and as a head start aide. Following VISTA I went back to A & M where I completed my B.A. in History. In 1974 I received my law degree from South Texas College of Law and immediately started practicing criminal law. The last 19 years of practice have been with my law partner Edward Mallett and just last year we added Tom Berg to the firm.
While I am admitted to practice law here in Texas, I have and continue to take cases around the country. My practice has taken me to St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands to the east and to California and Washington in the west and many places in between. My criminal cases have also taken me to England, Canada and Mexico.
I look forward to assisting you with whatever legal issue you are burdened with and know that if I cannot help you I will know someone who can.
